Today marks the anniversary of opening our Woodlawn space, a milestone that carries deep meaning. After the pandemic forced us to close our doors, we faced the daunting challenge of rebuilding a business in our 40s with limited resources. The past four years have tested our resolve in ways we never imagined. This post shares the journey of struggle, perseverance, and the power of community that kept us moving forward.

The Challenge of Rebuilding in Midlife
Rebuilding a business after a crisis is never easy. Doing it in your 40s, with financial constraints and personal responsibilities, adds layers of complexity. When COVID hit, like many others, we had to close our doors. The uncertainty was overwhelming. We had no clear roadmap, no extra funds, and the fitness industry was one of the hardest hit. We weren't allowed to do in personal classes, we struggled finding a way to set up for virtual classes and we missed the energy of our community.
The struggle was not just financial. It was emotional and mental. There were days when giving up seemed like the only option. Balancing multiple jobs to keep the business afloat drained our energy. Yet, the desire to serve our community and create a safe, welcoming space kept us going.
Lessons Learned from the Hardest Years
Since 2012, I have been teaching and building this business with passion. The last four years have been the toughest by far. Here are some key lessons from this journey:
Persistence matters: Even when progress was slow, showing up every day made a difference.
Flexibility is essential: We adapted our services, schedules, and marketing to meet changing needs.
Community is a foundation: Our members and neighbours provided support, encouragement, and feedback.
Multiple income streams help: Working several jobs alongside the business was necessary to cover expenses.
Mental health needs attention: Taking care of ourselves allowed us to keep helping others.
These lessons are not just business tips. They reflect the reality of rebuilding a dream under pressure.

The Role of Community in Our Recovery
Our community has been the heart of this journey. We wanted to create more than a fitness studio; we aimed to build a safe space where people feel welcome and supported. This vision kept us motivated through the toughest times.
Members shared stories of how the space helped them heal, grow, and connect. Their trust reminded us why we started this business. The relationships formed here are a reminder that success is not just about numbers but about impact.
Practical Steps We Took to Stay Afloat
Reopening without much capital required creativity and hard work. Some practical steps included:
Negotiating flexible lease terms with landlords to reduce upfront costs.
Offering virtual classes to reach members unable to attend in person.
Collaborating with local businesses for cross-promotion and shared events.
Using social media thoughtfully to keep the community informed and engaged.
Prioritizing essential expenses and cutting non-critical costs.
Seeking small grants and community funding when available.
These actions helped us stretch limited resources and maintain momentum.
Looking Ahead: Continuing the Mission
As we celebrate this anniversary, the journey is far from over. We remain committed to our mission of fostering a safe, inclusive fitness space. The pandemic taught us resilience and the importance of community support.
We encourage others facing similar struggles to keep pushing forward. Rebuilding takes time, patience, and a willingness to adapt. Most importantly, it requires belief in the value of what you offer.
